Best Supporting Actor
Michael Fassbender, 12 Years A Slave
Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips
Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
Jonah Hill, The Wolf Of Wall Street
A great category. Hill’s out and Cooper SHOULD be out, but for reasons unknown people are ignoring he fact that Cooper is taking his Silver Linings Playbook role and over-acting like crazy.
It’s hard to look past Jared Leto as Rayon here. An understated transvestite performance is rare. Well done to a guy we mostly think of as a singer nowadays.
Winner: Jared Leto
I will be mad if: Bradley Cooper wins.
Best Supporting Actress
Julia Roberts, August: Osage County
June Squibb, Nebraska
Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine
Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years A Slave
Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
The narrative rests with either Squibb (age) or Nyong’o (race), but the deserving winner is Jennifer Lawrence. Will the Academy give her two Oscars in a row? Unlikely. I’ll suggest Squibb wins.
Winner: June Squibb
I will be mad if: Julia Roberts wins. Ugh.
Christian Bale, American Hustle
Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years A Slave
Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
Bruce Dern, Nebraska
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf Of Wall Street
The toughest category this year with 5 very worthy performances. I’d take Bale’s understated role personally, but the narrative is with Leo (it’s time) or McConaughey (the McConaissanse).
Winner: Matthew McConaughey
I will be mad if: none. All fantastic performances.
Meryl Streep, August: Osage County
Sandra Bullock, Gravity
Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
Amy Adams, American Hustle
Judi Dench, Philomena
Not that I’ve seen it, but all the talk is this is Blanchett’s to lose. But Bullock and Dench were incredible with Adams not far behind.
Winner: Cate Blanchett
I will be mad if: Meryl wins. Good performance, but not compared to the others.
Steve McQueen, 12 Years A Slave
Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
Martin Scorsese, The Wolf Of Wall Street
Alexander Payne, Nebraska
David O. Russell, American Hustle
Cuaron was absolutely magnificent in direct ing the sight, sound and acting spectacular that is Graviy. It’s hard for me to seriously justify the other contenders against him. The closest would be the patient, careful film making of McQueen. The furthest would be the madcap slopfest of David O. Russell.
Winner: Alfonso Cuaron
I will be mad if: David O. Russell wins.
12 Years A Slave
The Wolf Of Wall Street
Dallas Buyers Club
A two way race between Gravity and 12 Years A Slave. I think this should bethe year when America picks the slavery film, finally.
Winner: 12 Years A Slave
I will be mad if: American Hustle wins. Argo 2.0.
